It Technology 1.0 INTRODUCTION A quote from a PC World magazine on The Digital Future said, in the future, people will live twice as long, computers will die twice as fast 1. As computer technology continues to accelerate at an unprecedented rate, information technology (IT) equipment waste is becoming an increasingly significant portion of the solid waste stream. Information Technology equipment waste is receiving increased attention for the following reasons: ? Rapid advances in technology result in IT equipment becoming obsolete at an increasingly rapid pace. This is resulting in an increase in the rate and quantity of IT equipment entering the waste stream; ? A piece of IT equipment was, or is typically of high value, both in terms of its component parts and the equipment itself; ? IT equipment commonly contains toxic materials, which are hazardous if not managed properly. This project provides a broad overview of how such products are handled and to estimate the amounts of these products and materials that will enter the waste stream in the next few years. The specific waste streams addressed include: ? personal computers, ? monitors, ? laptop computers, ? peripherals (e.g., printers, scanners), 2.0 WASTE ESTIMATES FOR IT EQUIPMENT This section will address the generation and flow of computer equipment waste from both residential and IC&I sources in Canada. The types of computer equipment addressed in this project and discussed in this section include: - Computers (personal computers, servers); - Monitors; - Laptop computers; - Printers; - Note-pads/note-books, and; - Peripherals (scanners, modems, keyboards etc.). The flow of computer equipment in the solid waste stream will require increasing attention in the future for the following reasons: - The decreasing lifespan of IT products and their increasing annual sales, resulting in greater discards of computer equipment waste on an annual basis; - The mixed composition of computer equipment (i.e., metals, plastics, glass), which makes dismantling and recycling challenging; - The presence of hazardous materials; and, - The life cycle ecological burden represented by waste IT equipment. Computer equipment can become obsolete as a result of technological advancements, for example: - Increasing micro processing speed from 80386 to 80486 to Pentium I, II and now III generation systems; - Increasing memory capacity to support faster microprocessors and expanded storage requirements; - Internet developments that cannot be accessed using older systems; - New and expanding operating systems and software that cannot run on older systems; - Advancements in color, resolution and technology for monitors (i.e., flat panel monitors); - Increasing speed and color performance for laser and ink-jet printers, and - Merging technologies such as all-in-one equipment, with faxing, printing and scanning capabilities provided in one unit. These factors have reduced both the average first life and total lifespan of computer equipment where first life refers to the amount of time a product is useful to its original owner and total lifespan is the period from manufacture to disposal 2. Computer equipment sales are projected to continue to grow as a result of decreasing lifespan and the increased use of computers in businesses, institutions and at home. The largest growth in computer sales is into the residential market. In 1998 there were 1.9 million computers installed in Canadian homes and in 2000, there were 2.2 million an increase of 16%. In the education sector, installed computers increased by 9% in 1999, to 1.4 million. Installed computers in the business sector increased from 6.2 million in 1999 to 7.0 million in 2000 an increase of 13% 3. Figure 2-1 presents a simplified schematic of the lifespan of computer equipment from point of sale, through use, to end of first life, to diversion (reuse and recycling) and to disposal. 3.0 IT Waste Generation Each year millions of new computers, monitors, laptops and peripherals are sold into the Canadian marketplace. Some of these sales represent new customers(Businesses, Institutions, Homes, Government offices) who are purchasing computer equipment for the first time, while the majority are those that are replacing old or out dated equipment found in residential, commercial and institutional settings. The obsolete equipment is typically 3-5 years old 4 and, while often still usable (i.e., not broken), it no longer meets the needs of the user. The point at which a computer becomes obsolete is also referred to as the end of the equipments first life. Not all style guides agree as to what should be considered a major word. Most agree that nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and subordinating conjunctions (if, because, as, that, etc.) are major words and should always be capitalized. That leaves articles (a, an, the), prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, for, nor) in the minor league where lowercase prevails. Unfortunately, as is frequent with arbitrary rules, style guides donââ¬â¢t always agree. Both the Chicago Manual of Style and the AP Stylebook agree that articles (a, an, the), and coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, for, nor) should not be capitalized unless they are the first or last word of the title, but when it comes to prepositions, they differ. CMOS says never capitalize a preposition unless it is the first word in the title. AP says leave short prepositions in lowercase, but capitalize prepositions and conjunctions of four or more letters. Majority of the Chinese immigrants in the 19th century were males. They dreamt of earning a decent income in the U.S. and afterward going back to China eventually. Married women stayed in China to take care of domestic duties like caring for their children and the parents of their husbands. Moreover, Chinese in cities were mostly working in the ser vice industry. Chinese in the urban neighborhoods were very secluded from mainstream U.S. A large number of Chinese American was raised speaking only their own native language and seldom socializing with Whites. Chinese immigrants were eventually hired in other industries such as mining, construction, etc. On the other hand, just like the Chinese, the earliest Japanese immigrant arrived in the U.S. in the 19th century. Also, similar to the Chinese, they arrived as peasants; but, not like the Chinese, many Japanese settlers became plantation laborers in Hawaii. Inland, a large number of Japanese who were originally hired as agricultural laborers eventually became independent, entrepreneurial farmers and traders. In urban areas, they built small communities where they may interact and help each other, speak their mother tongue, and eat accustomed food (Min 10). After Japanese men had secured themselves in the U.S., they get their wives from Japan, and their wives helped them in farms and businesses. Japanese migrated to the United States to live and raise families. On the other hand, a small number of Filipinos settled in the U.S. prior to the turn of the 20th century. Majority of early Filipino settlers after 1898 were already American citizens, the period that the U.S. gained the Philippines at the end of the Spanish-American War (Min 12). Filipino immigrants were looking for work in Hawaiian plantations and in the mainland. They also worked as service or domestic workers. In the early 20th century, a large number of Filipino laborers formed labor unions, but their attempts to acquire wage raise were countered with aggression by their employers and White colleagues who did not want any competition. More open to intermarriage than other Asian Americans, particularly Japanese and Chinese, Filipino males also inflamed racial violence and resentment by marrying White females. Buddha taught and organized the Sangha, monastic orders, until his death at Kusinagara, at the age of 80. There are 308,000,000 Buddhist devotees in the world today. They believe that there has been Buddha before Him; Bodhisattvas who come as Saviors of all and that all beings are Buddha whether they realize it or not. There are 4 cardinal events in the life of Buddha that represents 4 major pilgrimage centers for Buddhists: His Birth at Kapilavastu, His Enlightenment at Bodhgaya, His First Sermon at Sarnath, and His Death at Kusinagara. There is a Gandhara style, frieze on stone, located in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., that shows all 4 of these events. After Alexander the Great conquered Afghanistan, Pakistan and Kashmir, these areas, for the first few centuries, were not allowed to portray images of Buddha. However, the Gandhara style, of the late 2nd and early 3rd century AD, derives from the Hellenistic and Roman style, so appealing to the Western taste. Effects of Music on the Growth of Mung Beans
CHAPTER V SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS This chapter presents the summary of finding the generalization of the conclusion and the recommendation for the further improvement of the study. I. Summary of Findings 1. Music affects the growth of Mung beans. As established in the experiment and based on the data gathered, music has a great effect on the growth of Mung beans. The varying degree of effect is dependent on the type or tempo of music to be played. 2.In general, music helps in the growth of plants. It hastens the growth of plants. As we conducted and observed our experiment, we noticed that classical music helps the Mung beans' growth. Plants exposed to rock music grew slower than those exposed to classical music; however, they grew faster than those exposed to no music. 3. The growth of the green variety of Mung beans is faster than those of the yellow variety in any of the environment they were subjected to.II. Conclusions 1. Music affects the growth of Mung beans as we observed the set-ups. The different aspects that we have observed where music was involved were the plant's height and the number of leaves produced. 2. Music helps the Mung beans' growth and does not hinder their development. 3. Music, more specifically the classic music, has effects on the growth of Mung beans especially on the growth of the green variety. III. Recommendations 1.As we have proven through the data gathered that music hastens the growth of plants, we recommend promoting the use of music in planting and other agricultural activities. This can be done through discussions in the different fora to bring to the awareness of the authorities and the agricultural sector the benefits of music in planting. 2. We recommend that in the utilization of music for plant growing, you should use classical music in order for you to grow your plants faster. 3. He also believed that political action and agitation were also ways to achieve equality for blacks. Even though Dubois disagreed with many of Washingtons opinions, but he also respected him as one of the first true black intellectuals who tried to help the black race. Both Washington and DuBois wanted to end racism for blacks in America. They also where both powerful leaders in the late 1800s and early 1900s and are college graduates. Lastly, they both wanted a good education for African Americans. As you can see, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois had a shared overall goal of improving the political, economic, and social standing of African Americans. I think they both have good ideas on how to fix the problem. Du Bois favored education and political action, While Washington wanted to wait it out and make progress through the learning of skills and trades.
